National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center: Artist Registry

About the National September 11 Memorial & Museum Artists Registry

The Artists Registry at the National September 11 Memorial Museum (NS11MM) is an online digital database. The Registry's mission is to provide a gathering place and virtual gallery for art created in response to the events of September 11 by members of a diverse artistic community ranging from seasoned professionals to individuals inspired, perhaps for the first time, to express their reactions to 9/11 through visual, tactile or auditory media. The database, which is not formally curated, reflects the democratic breadth of artistic and artisanal response to the tragedy of the September 11 terrorist attacks and their aftermath. It is intended to serve as a resource for the artistic community, scholars, journalists and the interested public.

If you were motivated to create artwork in response to September 11, we invite you to participate in this Registry. The database allows artists to include up to 12 images, audio or video files, a statement and resume/bio. Each artist's online portfolio can be enhanced with supplementary descriptive information and self-selected thematic tags. Visitors to the Artists Registry can browse this compendium of artwork by artist name, location, creation date, medium and theme. Visitors who create their own account may also save favorite artwork to a personalized Favorites folder.

Application Procedure

To join the NS11MM Artists Registry you must have an active email address (this will serve as your username) and be prepared to post a minimum of one image to the database. Image files should be in JPG format with 72 dpi resolution and a MINIMUM of 350 x 450 pixels for best results. The online database will automatically re-size your images to fit these parameters, and will keep the aspect ratio. Because very large files may take longer to upload, it is best to keep them under 1MB in size. Please see the FAQ page for information about uploading audio and video files.

It's easy to upload artwork to the Artists Registry at the National September 11 Memorial Museum. Start by going to the page titled Create an Account and fill out the required information. Once you complete this opening page and hit ìsend,î an email will arrive automatically in your in-box containing your unique password. With that password, you can now log-in to your page and upload images, an artist's statement and biographical/resume information. After you have uploaded at least one image depicting your work and your artist's statement, a NS11MM museum administrator will briefly review your portfolio to check for technological problems or extreme content that might be offensive to the majority of the site's users. After our page has been cleared for posting, it will usually appear online within 14 days. Please allow up to 28 days before contacting the administrator, however. After your account has been activated, you may update and access your portfolio page at your convenience. Changes made to your contact information will be automatically uploaded, but changes made to the content of your portfolio (images, artists' statement, etc) will be reviewed by the NS11MM administrator according to the criteria previously noted before they are posted.

The new web interface allows you to make changes to your portfolio at your convenience. Just log in and go to the 'My Account' section where you will be able to register changes. Please remember to update your artist file with any address, email, or phone number changes. It is particularly important to keep your email address current as this is how the Museum and site users will be able to contact you.

The National September 11 Memorial Museum is NO LONGER ACCEPTING HARD FILE submissions about artwork unless there is a specific reason to request them. PLEASE DO NOT send these materials as they will be returned to you if a self-addressed stamped envelope is included, or discarded if no postage has been included.
