Moment of Recognition glass, language 4"x44"x78" "MOMENT OF RECOGNITION"
Elizabeth Michelman --- Artist’s Statement July 18, 2008
"Moment of Recognition" is a participatory sculpture-in-progress rooted in the national trauma of September 11, 2001. I invite my audience to join me in creating this work that explores the personal and political implications of an American identity.
The sculpture proposes a series of exchanges through which participants build their own community. The now half-completed work takes the form of a giant r...

Flag of Honor cloth and canvas 42" X 60", 20" X 24" Dear Friend,
The Flag of Honor and Flag of Heroes were created with the sincere intention of honoring the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001. I developed them while recuperating from emergency bypass surgery. Being suddenly faced with my own mortality I was especially sensitive to the fate of the victims. In my heart I felt that the victims should never be relegated to mere numbers but must always be remembered as individual lives.
The Flag of Honor contains the ...

Salute to the Rescue Boats/9-02 batik:wax, dye on cotton 23"x40" Batik is the medium that is associated with decorative, functional items. My early work did consist of simple designs, but my style has emerged into a more intricate, representational one.
My personal experiences as a volunteer at Point Thank You have acted as a catalyst to represent contemporary life in the city.
I am constantly striving to improve and expand my technique and the implication in capturing the intrinsic essence of the moment.

Fallen Heroes US Postal Stamps 15"x25"
As a proud American I wanted to exprees the reason why I wanted to donate this sculpture I designed depicting The United States Postal Stamp entitled " Fallen Heroes'. The Stamp depicts three firemen placing the United States flag on a pole after the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
I was born on the lower east side of Manhattan and growing up in the area where the World Trade Center was built. I felt compelled to give something back for those who gave of themselves for all of us...

Poem I wrote depicting how I felt on 9/11
"Moment In Time"
Walking slowly, the whirling blur of a distant movie
came into view
impending Danger threatened my Soul
Inexplicably, Reason left me. I could not See
Fear scaled to a higher octave
Time had Stopped
All that Was

The Techknomes Logo "Never Forget" is a song that was written as a tribute to those who lost their lives in 9/11, and a tribute to those who honor that memory every day. The piece originally started out as a piano piece written by John Wilkie and Barry Morgan, with the piano part played by Barry. A young lady, Holly Prothman, was moved so much by the piece, that she wrote lyrics and sang on the song. The result is a haunting, beautiful song that describes the feelings of loss and remembrance.

We Will Never Forget braclets, picture & twin tower badge 4' x 5' I was at the Fire Station on Sept 11, 2001. I was saddened by what had happened. I will never forget my brothers that died that day nor will I forget the people who lost their lives.
About a month or so later Symbol Arts released silver bracelets with all of the FF's names and rank on them. I decided to show my love for my lost brothers by doing a Memorial Shadow Box. The guys on the Dept teased me to no end. They about died when they found out how much I spent on the box.
Thanks needs to...

Car in Front of Capitol Building My name is Robert Mulligan, I am a Police Officer in Keansburg, New Jersey. Following the attacks on 9/11, I had readied a 1966 Pontiac Catalina for a trip that I would take around the country to pay respect to the victims and families that had lost so much. I also did it because we live in a country that has fought for so long to give us the privilege to go any where we want too.
The car was made ready through help from many sponsors and friends who felt the same way I did. We just want...

Welcome Home Carbon Dust and Graphite 32"x40" I have been drawing for 20 years and never have I been so passionate about my work than now. More than ever the people of America need to see the vision of artists to help reflect their own thoughts back to them. I am a devote believer in the power of art and it's influence.
I have lost family to horrible terrorist acts. Instead of hating those involved in the horrific act, I remeber those who died. Remembering their lives is more important.
One day I hope that through artistic rep...

BRAVE NEW AMERICAN HEROES
On September 4th, David Musial was asked by an officer for "DARE AMERICA" if he had one more song for a full 10 song album featuring "MJ Medina," he thought for a moment and then said "yes." David was teaching a class at NYU in 1993 at the moment the first bomb hit the World Trade Center. That evening he wrote an anti-terrorism song titled "Earthquake." After it was recorded, he sent it to Hilary Clinton at the White House. ...

September 11th, The Day the Angels Cried - Despair Oil on Canvas H. 5' x W... My art is primarily about spirituality and sensuality. It also encompasses humanness, passion, justice, dignity, nature, peace and most importantly love. The spiritual represents the soul and the sensual physicality. I believe that these two realms must interconnect and unite positively together in order for the whole world to evolve. Art is a way for bringing these two forces together and demonstrating their mystical power. Therefore, I believe in the ultimate divinity of my art and th...
