Pale Male: A Pilgrimage

Pale Male: A Pilgrimage springs forth from my own spiritual journey. Its direction comes not from my hand alone and its outpouring still rather mystifies me. I look at it as a contemporary icon of sorts. It comes out a soul-searching time, primarily post 9/11, when I was questioning the very meaning of creating art in such a world and the significance it could have. The title references the story of the famous hawk who made his home in a balcony window in a luxury New York City apartment complex, but it also alludes to Christ drained of blood, hanging on the cross, another form of sacrifice... and home for many who are lost.

Pondering an exhibition of Byzantine Icons at The Metropolitan Museum in 2004, I discovered that icons were understood to be “the strength, shelter, consolation and spiritual reinforcement of a nation which was in danger and later in bondage.” This forced me to consider, “What holy icons or art are our nation’s reinforcement? Having worked for over ten years at the World Trade Center, arguably the heart of capitalism, I pondered the situation… Jesus vs. Nike… who wins in our commodity-driven world?”

Out of this exploration erupts Pale Male: A Pilgrimage, where soul and science, real and virtual unite in an attempt to reach out and touch as in digit, finger, senses… the human heart and spirit.

PaleMale: A Pilgrimage is a contemporary icon in the form of a DIMONscape®*, a new form of art created by artist, Roz Dimon. A co-joining of the digital and spiritual, this artwork does more than sit on the wall as an artwork to be admired; it attempts to reach out and ‘touch’ in two spheres, the real (on the wall) and the virtual (on the web). Combining her classically trained eye with a media-filled brush, the artist brings a beauty and order to the complexities of today’s information world in a single work of art.

On the wall this work is a 48”x36 limited edition chromogenic print. On the web, it is can be constructed and deconstructed in the form of an interactive journey.

A woman looks back on her life as she approaches the end of it. Multiple images cascade into one vision. Jet Age was commissioned by a law firm specializing in Elder Law. Clients contemplate this image in the law office waiting room and then later may interact with it on the web putting themselves in the shoes of the artist and actually rebuilding the story of the art by clicking on various words that are linked to the artwork. A continuation of Dimon's Information Paintings... this is art which responds to our Information Age, and used information tools (digital) to create the work in a way that is not possible in other media. Dimon has a patent pending on this process which she calls a DIMONscape®.
